Fresh pine scented air, a glistening lake, snow-capped mountains and excited, contagious energy only begin to paint the daily picture of Champ Camp. Champ Camp is the American Lung Association in Colorado’s weeklong summer camp for children with asthma. Celebrating its 33rd summer, Champ Camp was founded in 1979 with the mission to educate and empower children to independently manage their asthma.

Bowling for Better Breathing

Over the years, Champ Camp has impacted more than 3,500 children in Colorado. At camp children gain confidence in themselves and in their ability to take control of their lifelong condition. Asthma can be troublesome if not handled properly, and can even be life-threatening. It is very important to identify and avoid asthma triggers, stay active and know how to properly take prescribed asthma medications. At camp children learn about their individual asthma triggers, and what to do if they’re exposed to those triggers, all the while gaining new experiences, knowledge and confidence. Campers individually take on activities that they may have never done before, from rock-climbing, to hiking, to canoeing and karaoke. Champ campers leave camp armed with all the necessary tools to take responsibility over their asthma and no longer live in fear of an asthma attack.

On March 29, 2013 the 3rd annual Bowling for Better Breathing will bring together an array of people to help raise funds to for full and partial scholarships for children and adolescents to attend Champ Camp. These scholarships create an opportunity for young people, regardless of family income, to learn how to manage their asthma and empower them with the knowledge and tools needed to make important decisions around control their asthma. Bowling for Better Breathing is spearheaded by the Colorado Asthma Coalition – a consortium of healthcare professionals and community members committed to working together to improve the lives of Coloradans living with asthma.

Amid the bowling, attendees will enjoy a special raffle to benefit the programs of the American Lung Association in Colorado. Food and beer will also be available.

The Volunteers of America RSVP Program connects volunteers 55 and better with meaningful opportunities to serve in Denver and the surrounding communities. 

RSVP Senior Volunteers in Denver Colorado

RSVP is a national, non-profit volunteer program for those 55 years and better who want to share their wisdom, skills, time, and enthusiasm in their community locally sponsored by Volunteers of America in the Denver metro area.

Where do RSVP senior volunteers serve?

There are over 600 volunteers serving in the Denver metro area supporting the mission of Volunteers of America and 60 other non-profits in the metro area.  Popular volunteer opportunities include delivering Meals on Wheels, tutoring and mentoring in the schools, educating the community on disaster preparedness, and volunteering at one-time special events.  Last year, Denver RSVP volunteers donated over 106,000 hours of service to the community. RSVP works with approximately 60 non-profit agencies in the Denver area, which allows us to find the ideal volunteer position for each of our volunteers, along with a group of Special Projects Volunteers, who help with one-day projects and activities.

Why become an RSVP Volunteer?

RSVP is a one-stop-shop for volunteer opportunities in the metro area.  Many times someone who is interested in volunteering will look for an organization, complete the application, pass a background check, and attend an orientation, only to discover that it is not a good fit.  At this point the volunteer is back to square one, and has to start the process all over again.

RSVP takes all the work out of finding and getting connected to volunteer opportunities.  With RSVP, you fill out one application and attend one orientation.  They connect you with as few or as many volunteer opportunities as you like, based on your interests and skills.  In addition, RSVP provides all actively enrolled volunteers with supplemental liability insurance that covers volunteers traveling to and from their volunteer stations, as well as the duration of their volunteer shifts.  You may even qualify for travel reimbursement to help cover the cost of transportation to and from your volunteer station!  You’ll also enjoy our social activities and monthly community projects!

You all know how much we LOVE Richard Sandoval Restaurants from when we stalked him at the Snowmass Culinary & Arts Festival our review of Venga Venga  and added La Sandia to the top spots for a glass of wine in South Denver here. This unique restaurant group is known for unique recipes, food presentation and spectacular decor so it wasn’t a surprise when Zengo introduced a new concept for downtown Denver Brunch aficionados, the bottomless brunch. What does that mean? Amazing small plates, free flowing brunch cocktails and a DJ for one very reasonable price.

There are three types of sushi included, our favorite was the Angry Zengo Roll that had tuna, wasabi tobiko, avocado and cucumber. The Thai Chicken Empanadas were ridiculously delicious with chile poblano, oaxaca cheese  and mango salsa. We loved the presentation of the Beef Albondigas served in the individual sized cast iron skillets. They were wonderful little balls of beef joy with roasted red peppers,  kimchee, spicy tomato hoisin topped with crispy onions (Note: I order anything that has crispy onions).

We LOVED this brunch… everything about it!

I went with my husband and daughter. My daughter wants to return with her 20 something friends and have a Fun Day Sunday  as she called it starting there and following it up with Elitches/Sports Event/16th Street Mall walking and my husband got to eat small plates but have enough to eat.. Not always the case when you hear “small plates” but remember this is a bottomless brunch!

It was also a momentous occasion because I tried Sushi for the very first time..  WOW..It was really good.. I know.. I should have tried it sooner but this was just a place you could trust to do it up right.

Everything thing we ate was wonderful and between the three of us I think we ordered 90% of the small plates on the menu.

Of particular note was our server Heather. She was fantastic! She asked US if anyone had any food allergies (Normally you have to make a note of it yourself) When we told her there was a Shrimp allergy she let us know that the thai chicken empanadas did have shrimp in the sauce and she offered to have it served with that on the side.
