Second arrest made in Ultra Diamonds robbery, both suspects now in custody

Yesterday, a second arrest was made in the July 22 armed robbery at Ultra Diamonds jewelry store, 5050 Factory Shops Blvd at the Castle Rock Outlets.

Leandro “Eric” Madrid, 20, was arrested in Pueblo, where he remains in the Pueblo County jail on $1 million bond.

Both individuals involved in the armed robbery are now in custody – Miguel Fuentes, 29, was arrested Aug. 6.

Castle Rock Police Detective Mike Williams has been working the case since the robbery occurred. He was able to capture images from the store’s surveillance equipment, which were distributed to law enforcement agencies statewide. He also issued a Crime Stoppers alert.

Other than the two sales representatives working in the store, there were no witnesses to the robbery, nor to the suspects’ escape. The pair made off with what’s estimated to be $95,000 worth of jewelry.

Colorado Springs police assisted Williams in identifying the first suspect, and a warrant was issued for Fuentes’ arrest.

Police also had Fuentes’ girlfriend under surveillance. She was arrested Aug. 7 for attempting to pawn some of the stolen jewelry. Williams estimates that roughly two-thirds of the jewelry that was stolen has been recovered.

Since the woman’s arrest, Williams has been working with the Colorado Springs and Pueblo police departments to arrest the robbers.

He acted on a tip about a potential second suspect, from which he was able to identify Madrid.

A warrant for Madrid’s arrest was issued August 20, and police arrested him without incident yesterday afternoon. He provided a full confession to this crime and acknowledged his role in other area violent crimes, as well. He is facing charges of armed robbery, menacing, kidnapping, felony theft and first-degree burglary.

“This is excellent police work,” said Castle Rock Police Chief Tony Lane. “This is quick and persistent action on behalf of Detective Mike Williams, and it was tremendous cooperation between several jurisdictions. These are two violent criminals that are now off the street.”
