Book Club Express announced at the Douglas County Library

Book Club Express makes it easy to reserve a whole set of books for your book club: easy online system, up to six months in advance, keep items for up to six weeks.

Books are provided in kit form. Each kit includes multiple copies of a book, author biographies, discussion questions, and more. The library’s collection includes more than 150 titles from which to choose for adults, children, and teens.

Book Club Express Reserve allows users to see what kits are available and when they are available, reserve specific kits, specify a pickup location, and keep track of what kits they have reserved.

• Sandra Quick’s neighborhood book club is reading the popular “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson. But its 11 members each read a copy without stepping foot in a book store or spending a dime. 
 Quick is a long-time user of Douglas County Libraries’ Book Club Express (BCE) service. Using BCE, she reserves and checks out multiple copies of her club’s selections, picks them up at a single location, and keeps them for up to six weeks.

“I love the convenience of Book Club Express,” said Quick, whose club of women from all walks of life has read nearly half of the library’s available Book Club Express titles. “It’s great to be able to get copies of timely books without having to buy them, and it’s nice to pick them up at the library, which is very near where I live.”

Quick recently used the online BCE Reserve system to put titles on hold for her club’s next six monthly meetings. “I’m a klutz with the computer,” said Quick. “But this was really easy to do. Once it’s done, I don’t have to think about it again until I pick the books up. It also makes it easy for my members in their 80s and 90s to get the books without spending a lot or making a special trip.”

“The online system eliminates a lot of e-mailing back and forth,” said Quick. “I’m thrilled with the service, and how helpful the library staff has been when I’ve needed help.”

The submitted project was the Norton Farms Trailhead and Trail Connection and is among 15 other projects in Colorado that were chosen to receive grant money.

The four acre trail head will include:

• a picnic shelter rest area with historic and interpretive signage
• parking for 33 cars and accommodate school buses
• concrete and soft surface trail connections
• a trail connection linking this trailhead with the Cherry Creek Regional Trail to the west and the 17 Mile House historic property to the north in Arapahoe County.

Both Douglas and Arapahoe county are contributing funding for the open space project.

“These grants help the Town continue with our mission to create and preserve parks and open space,” said Mayor David Casiano. “We are fortunate to be able to move ahead with this project during tough economic times.”

What is Great Outdoors Colorado? (GOCO) Their mission is to help preserve, protect, enhance, and manage the state’s wildlife, park, river, trail, and open space heritage. In 1992 the voters of Colorado approved the GOCO Amendment to use 50% of the Colorado Lottery monies to fund this great conservation project and it’s their only source of funding. The remaining lottery earnings go to the Conservation Trust Fund and the Colorado State Parks. The Great Outdoors Colorado Grants Awarded in Douglas County through December 2009 equals $8,795,814.00. and includes the Cherry Creek Traill and the Tallman Gulch Trail.

The sculpture will be placed in the courtyard of the main entrance to this new building and should be a three-dimensional monumental piece of artwork with the approximate size being 8′-10′ vertical.

Committee Statement on the Art:

This piece should be vertical in nature and should create a welcoming, calming environment while communicating a sense of the safety and strength shared between the hometown community of Parker and its police force. The piece should represent Parker’s vision to become a full service community with a hometown feel.

This building will be a showpiece that was designed by Anderson Mason Dale Architects and  consists of a one story 53,500 square feet with a 22′ glass entrace leading to the atrium. The windows were designed to show a beautiful panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains. This airy open feel is attempting to reflect the Town of Parker’s committment to open and transparent law enforcement.

In 2008 Every Creature Counts was able to save 2189 animals who found their forever homes  and 7,102 dogs and cats were spayed and neutered, ECC is hoping to double those figures this year.

The fourth annual Holiday Bazaar put on by The Mountain Pine Woman’s Club.

Mountain Pine Woman’s Club is a local not for profit organization affiliated nationally and internationally with General Federated Woman’s Club. Mountain Pine Woman’s Club donates 100% of all profit back into the community through scholarships and to other organizations.

This path around The Wildlife Experience is lined with beautiful light sculptures and colorfully light-coated trees. Escape the cold with a cup of cocoa from a refreshment station along the path and get a family picture with dazzling Winter WonderLights backdrop, or with one of the many stunning sculptures found along the path!

A perfect place to end the trails’ journey is in The Wildlife Experience’s newest exhibit Globeology. Visitors can warm up by exploring this quarter-mile indoor path through eight different worldly biomes including the Arctic Tundra where visitors can gaze eye to eye with polar bears and delight in the Aurora Borealis.

Before you leave the warmth of the indoors, be sure to write your letter to Santa as you will soon bundle up to wander around the whimsical Santa’s Village. Full of winter charm and merriment, guests enter the enchanting village and are instantly transported to the magical world of the North Pole. Live reindeer prepare for the big night as elves keep busy by entertaining and spreading good cheer. Throughout the village, families are welcomed to a variety of snowy villas where children can visit with Santa as they warm by the fire in the Claus’ living room and take a picture. Each villa provides a new encounter of holiday traditions, new and old, cheerful elves and clever ornamental trimmings. Educational opportunities await families to learn about favorite winter animals, such as the arctic fox, polar bears, orca whales…and many more!

After delivering your letter to Santa, guests can escape the winter chill and relax in the Extreme Screen Theater with a showing of the original animated, How the Grinch Stole Christmas complete with popcorn and other favorite holiday treats.
